Pity 24
A trajectory:
1) writer self-publishes short story called ‘Nothing Much Happens Around Here Now’ based on transcript called ‘Small Town Shit’.
2) film-maker reads story and decides it would make a good short film
3) film-maker and writer get together to discuss, apply for funding
4) two years and umpteen Film Victoria dollars later, Pity 24 starts doing the festival rounds.
Pity 24 is one of the things I am most proud of. I won an AWGIE for the script; it got me work on The Secret Life of Us (albeit the doomed fourth season); it screened in Los Angeles and at London’s Barbican and at Allison Anders’ Don’t Knock the Rock film festival. Directed by Amanda Kerley and produced by Sheridan Bott, Pity 24 centres on a group of teens talking about their friend who has just died unspectacularly in a car crash. It’s set in Ringwood in 1989 and has a beautiful Bee Gees song on the soundtrack (performed by the Lucksmiths) which unfortunately restricts potential TV sales. But I still show it at schools – contact me if you want me to show it at yours!
